One in five regeneration projects fails to engage and meet the needs of potential service users, according to research by Regeneration & Renewal.

A review of 151 projects featured in this magazine’s Evaluation Lessons columns in the last three years found that about ten per cent of projects were criticised for failing to communicate and engage with potential service users. The same proportion were found to have failed to meet the needs of service users.

Monitoring and evaluating projects was also a problem area, with more than a fifth of columns citing failures with this. Half of those criticisms were that projects lacked an effective way to measure their impact from the outset.

Of the 151 projects reviewed, some were criticised on several fronts, while others were not criticised at all.
